Burrito battle
Salad chain Sweetgreen recently introduced a new item on its menu called the "Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl." Seems harmless enough, right? Wrong. Chipotle Mexican Grill is now suing Sweetgreen for trademark infringement.
Chipotle sent Sweetgreen a cease and desist letter asking them to drop the word "chipotle" from the dish's name, but Sweetgreen didn't respond, so now Chipotle is taking legal action.
In addition to the name, Chipotle is also accusing Sweetgreen of using a font and color similar to Chipotle's logo in their advertisements for the dish. The Mexican Grill restaurant chain claims that Sweetgreen is trying to capitalize on Chipotle's success, and is asking for an injunction and the profits earned from the "Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl."
Sweetgreen's investors are probably not feeling so sweet right now, as the company's stock fell 6% after news of the lawsuit.
